About this deal
We laughed many times and loved the humble touches shared from Pelé's career, such as this story from the final chapter in which he spends a little time talking about some of the other footballers he had known and played against. It was not until my nieces and nephews were of junior high school age that I even remember there being a soccer field in the town where I grew up. The most interesting sections of the book are about how Pele tried to deal with the adulation of his fans and how his finances differed as he became more famous. He is widely regarded as one of the best players in the history of football and an inspirational figure for generations of footballers.
He could easily have thrived in the modern game where tackling is non existent, but how many would survive the brutality of the defending from his era?He won numerous awards and titles with Santos, including the Campeonato Paulista seven times and the prestigious Copa Libertadores twice.
Although he was hailed as a national hero for his accomplishments in soccer, Pelé was also an influential person both on and off the pitch. For the Brazilian people he was the outsized superhero, a source of joy and exuberance in a sad, suppressed country.
