About this deal

Decide where to put your drain, and then dig your trench. The rule of thumb is that your pipe should have a space equal to its own width on either side, and at least 100mm from its top to the finished level before the turf is replaced. In our case, the trench is about 200mm wide (65mm space + 65mm pipe + 65mm space) and 180mm deep. Use your level to ensure that the trench is falling slightly in the required direction.

Subsoil and topsoil were mixed together during property construction, creating compacted soil that water has a hard time draining through. Allowing water to drain through a surface is the first part but for a garden drainage system to work it needs to go somewhere. The destination of the water needs to be able to handle the quantity which it frequently gets in moderate to bad rain. For smaller gardens a 400L capacity may be suitable. For low points which collect the whole neighbourhoods rain you will need a much larger solution. It’s very likely that you will recognise a soggy garden when you see one. Some of the symptoms include multiple puddles caused by rain that have trouble draining, squelching sounds upon stepping on the soil, reed or similar plants growing in the lawn, and the presence of moss. 10 factors that can lead to poor drainageProfessionals recommend installing a sump pump with most French drain systems to pump water out more efficiently. Planting trees or shrubs in a waterlogged garden spot. Not only will the plants fail to drain the water, but they will also perish since their roots will need to breathe. Your only option here is to plant bog plants, but they won’t be able to solve your problem completely, either. Instead, you will essentially create a different type of garden. A French drain is basically a trench filled with aggregate that allows water to drain away from areas that suffer from flooding. French drains are typically installed near the edge of a property, but require specialist attention to avoid any pipework, cables or similar service installations. Slope the French drain to carry the water down to its destination. Dig the trench across the waterlogged area and towards the soak away. Soil should have space within it so that water can flow between the particles and be stored within the soil. Over time soil can become compacted and less permeable which can result in much slower drainage from the surface.

After lining the trench with weed fabric, lay the pipe in the centre. Surround the pipe with small stone which is available from the builder’s merchants and garden centres. Clean stone with an average diameter of 20mm is fine. If you have extra space in your garden, try growing a “grassy swale” (also referred to as a “contour bund”). Such lush sections should be grown on a gradual slope. This will ensure that excess water will be able to run off and drain away at that location, keeping your garden safe. Enrich the soil with organic matter A creek bed like this can channel water away from a low spot or direct runoff into a rain garden or dry well. With the right landscaping, the creek bed will look good even when it’s dry. You can solve drainage problems and create an attractive landscape feature at the same time with a dry creek bed. Build a creek bed to direct water away from a low spot in your yard. Or if the slope of the ground permits it, use a creek bed to drain a low spot. Install a water barrel. You can even try building one but do keep in mind that water barrels can only collect water from downspouts.

As garden drainage installers we have seen it all and have come up with workable solutions to most garden drainage issues. This article walks you through the best garden drainage solutions with examples and their pros and cons. It was clear that a water storage solution was not going to work with this volume of water. She decided to get a drainage pump installed which redirected the garden water slightly uphill into the surface water drain at the side of the house. Not only did the drainage pump drain her garden but also sorted the neighbours gardens on both sides! Just like a French ditch, the herringbone drainage is built on a slope. However, unlike the French ditch, it consists of several trenches that are connected to the main drain, thus forming the so-called herringbone pattern. This technique is best used on flooded lawns or gardens that are irregular in shape. Here is what you need to do to install a successful herringbone drainage:
