This transformation tale of viewing events and conditions through different perspectives is an entertaining film experience. This outtakes reel, hosted by Koda, does feature the obligatory bodily humor, but also a cool Stitch cameo. The colours and movement of the film are dazzling and dreamlike, while the upbeat musical score includes songs by Phil Collins and Tina Turner. Now, brother hunts brother and Kenai's only hope for survival is to befriend his own worst enemy, a grizzly cub named Koda. I don’t know what this little gimmick has to say about how bears and humans look at the world, but you’ll be losing the effect of the transformation if you watch the “family-friendly” version. Surprisingly, Brother Bear's DVD is not housed by a cardboard slipcover the way other recent 2-disc Disney releases have been.

BROTHER BEAR is an unforgettable tale that explores the true meaning of brotherhood and what it means to walk in the footsteps of another. The film was originally going to be about Kenai and an older bear named Grizz, voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan.

It is one of the best documentaries I've seen on a recent Disney animated film, or any recent studio film, for that matter. The idea may seem familiar, and it should, as the practice was employed by Pixar for three of their high-profile animated films, beginning with A Bug's Life. The aspect ratio shift comes at the moment of transformation, when Kenai's perspective of the world changes. The most substantial extra of the entire set is "Paths of Discovery: The Making of Brother Bear", a 45-minute documentary. In the music video for "Look Through My Eyes" (4:00), Phil Collins performs with a band in front of and in between clips from the film.

In the "widescreen" version DVD, a warning is given that there are black bars on all four sides of the movie for the first 24 minutes (until Kenai is transformed into a bear). In the film, an Inuit boy named Kenai pursues a bear in revenge for a battle that he provoked in which his oldest brother, Sitka, is killed.The first disc contains what Disney describes as a “family friendly aspect ratio”, that means full frame 4:3 to you and me. Watching the movie in this ratio (yes I did watch the movie again in full frame, you will see why in the extras area), the film feels a little claustrophobic and the stunning scenery suffers from the reframed image, there is an important moment around the 24 minute mark where the image is supposed to widen (I'll explain more in a minute), but in 4:3 the effect is lost and the framing becomes tighter and even more uncomfortable. The one remaining human brother Denahi, seeks to track down the bear (who is actually Kenai) that he thinks is responsible for both of his siblings' deaths. Topics covered include the voice cast, the real locations that inspired animators, and the changing aspect ratio. Its insert folds out to six pages and contains a scene selection list, a two-page map of bonus features, and previews of the supplements on Discs 1 and 2.
